About Us

Since 1905, Metro’s Sports & Social Club has stood as a cornerstone of the Stretford community. What started as a workplace club for G.E.C employees has grown into a welcoming, member-owned hub for sport, entertainment, and connection. With a rich history, modern facilities, and a vibrant social calendar, Metro’s is a place where tradition meets good times—bringing people together through bowls, games, live events, and more.

How It All Began

Metro’s Sports & Social Club originally opened in 1905 as the Metropolitan Vickers Club, a Sports & Social Club created exclusively for employees of G.E.C (The General Electric Company) based in Trafford Park. Over time, the club evolved and was later known as the A.E.I Club, then the G.E.C Club.

In 1994, the members purchased the clubhouse and land, transforming it into a private members club, managed by an elected Executive Committee and Secretary. A steward/ess is employed to oversee the bars, ensuring members can always enjoy a good pint and a welcoming atmosphere.

In 2007, one of the bowling greens, the disused tennis courts, and the pitch and putt area were sold. The funds raised were used to design and build a brand-new clubhouse, which officially opened in December 2009.

It became what we now know as Metro’s Sports & Social Club.

Continuing the Legacy

We’re proud to be home to a thriving sports and social scene all year round.

During the summer, we have 10 Crown Green Bowling teams in action, while in the winter, our Indoor Bowling League features 10 teams competing across three nights a week. Metro’s also proudly hosts teams in pool, darts, and dominoes, keeping competitive spirit and camaraderie alive.

On Tuesday evenings, our popular Line Dancing kicks off at 8pm, bringing energy and fun to the club.

Our pool room now doubles as a relaxed space with Sky Sports on the screens, perfect for catching the game with friends and enjoying a pint.

Saturday nights are all about entertainment in our concert room, where we showcase superb cabaret acts—and yes, dancing is very much encouraged! We also keep the excitement going with Bingo, Play Your Cards Right, and Pick the Joker, with prizes reaching up to £1,000.

There’s plenty more to enjoy throughout the club:

Sunny Beer Garden & Three Bars: Ideal for a catch‑up or post‑match drink.

Function Rooms available to hire for birthdays (21+), anniversaries, weddings, christenings, and more.

Games Room with a full‑size snooker table and dedicated darts area.

Member Perks include discounted bar tabs and priority function bookings.

Big‑Screen Sports in both the main lounge and pool room, showing live football, rugby, and cricket.

Whether you’re here for sport, entertainment, or just a great night out—Metro’s is the place to be. Interested in becoming a member or hiring our function rooms? Get in touch today!
